There goes Supermom!

Oh, there goes supermom,” someone whispered as I struggled to open the door and walk through with a twin on each hip and diaper bag slung over my shoulder.

Both ladies smothered laughs and walked away.

I tried to shrug it off, not to feel hurt, but it stung a little anyway.

Those women think I have it all together, that raising six kids and being married to a farmer is easy. They tease our kids about having dirt under their fingernails but they have no idea during harvest, we live on the farm from dawn until dusk. They have no idea how long we scrub under those fingernails before finally giving up and falling into bed, exhausted from the day. They have no idea I have a to-do list a mile long, our house is in shambles as we replace the worn-out flooring, our furniture is piled sky high in three different rooms and we can’t even get IN the kitchen. They have no idea I rock my five-year-old to sleep most nights as he gasps for breath through tears because he misses his Gaga, my mom, more than anything.

I’m not Supermom. I’m not even a super mom. I’m just a super normal human. But I do serve a Superhero Savior who equips me with a superhuman strength to do the work He has called me to do.

What if we all gave each other the benefit of the doubt? What if we didn’t misunderstand and misinterpret each other’s actions? What if we recognized Jesus living in our lives and that every thing we do is to bring honor and glory to Him?

What if we walked a mile in another mom’s shoes, weeping for the loss of another child, grieving the unexpected loss of a family member, encouraging the mother kneeling at her bed each evening laying everything at the foot of the cross–AGAIN.

Resist the world’s misperceptions of a mother and be transformed by the Holy Spirit living in you to be the mom God has called you to be.

Romans 12:2

And be not conformed to this world: but be ye transformed by the renewing of your mind, that ye may prove what is that good, and acceptable, and perfect, will of God.

Encourage other moms. Motherhood is not a rat race, striving to outdo another mom for acknowledgement or affirmation. We are commanded (not suggested!) to encourage one another so let’s do it!

1 Thessalonians 5:11

Therefore encourage one another and build each other up, just as in fact you are doing.

Give grace to other moms! We are human and we are going to mess up, sometimes much bigger than other times but for the love of Christ Jesus living in you, be gracious!

Proverbs 16:24

Gracious words are a honeycomb, sweet to the soul and healing to the bones.

Doesn’t that sound amazing? Just reading the verse makes me want all of my words to be sweet to someone’s soul and healing to their bones!

As this week draws to an end and we feel inadequate to fulfill our motherly duties, let’s remember we are all moms depending on a holy strength to get us through. Let’s draw near to the Lord and to each other as we prayerfully exhort one another. Let’s set aside the weight of the world’s definition of a mom and remember moms come in all shapes and sizes, all different walks of life, some working and some staying home, but we are ALL working towards the same goal.

Remember this throughout the rest of the week:

I will lift mine eyes into the hills, from where my help comes from. My help comes from the Lord, maker of heaven and earth.

Psalm 121:1-2

No mom is Supermom but we need that superhuman help, so lift your eyes to the hills from where our help comes from.

Until next time,

The Farm Wyfe
