A Little Rattled

Aaaaagggghhhhhh,” I screamed. “A rat! A rat! There’s a rat by the squash plants!”

Hubs burst out laughing, “You’re ridiculous. You didn’t see a rat.”

I looked at him, incredulous, and gestured towards our children. “You’re calling me a liar in front of them?”

“Not exactly a liar,” he smirked, “but I doubt it was a rat. Maybe a field mouse but probably just a furry rotten squash.”

“It wasn’t a rotten squash,” I insisted. “It was a rat the size of a cat and it scurried away from me!”

Again, laughter. More laughter.

“It’s not funny! My heart is beating erratically!” I retorted.

“Oh babe, that’s a good one!” he doubled over, laughing hysterically. “ErRATically!”

I stifled the urge to burst out laughing with him.

Just then, Jelly yelled in his southern drawl, “Come over hair (here) RAT (right) now!”

Hubs apologized, “I’m sorry you’re RATtled.”

I lost it. Tears of hysteria rolled down my cheeks and I choked out, “Stop, please! I can’t take it….”

We finally calmed down enough to finish picking vegetables but every few minutes Hubs or one of the kids would burst out laughing all over again. I’m sure it will be a while before I ever live that down but no matter what, I promise you that was a rat there in the garden. That’s my story and I’m stickin’ to it!

(Please don’t let that deter you from participating in our farm work days though!)

Sometimes the heat and truckload of work to be done around the farm and life in general is overwhelming and gets to us. We have learned to laugh it off or we might just end up crying!

Over the past month, we have lost a calf, a sow, and 36 chickens in the storm last week and it’s heartbreaking but it could always be much much worse. We are thankful for the farm and the time we spend working together as a family to make our farm a success. We are thankful for our friends and family who support us and encourage us. If you’ve never been out to the farm, we invite you to come out and see us! We will give you a mini tour and send you home with some fresh veggies!

Thank you again for your support! Have a wonderful Memorial Day!

Until next time,

The Farm Wyfe
