A Letter to my First Grader’s parents

Dear Mom and Dad (and Grandma and Grandpa),

Every Sunday morning in my Sunday School class, I look forward to your child bursting through the doorway greeting their friends and me. Their faces light up as they push against each other to get to me, “Mrs. Amanda! Mrs. Amanda! I know my verse! Can I tell you my Bible verse this morning?”

I laugh and remind them to patiently line up and wait their turn. I love watching their faces as they quote their verse of the week and I know you have worked hard with them at home to memorize God’s word and hide it in their heart.

I love sitting with them as they color, listening to their stories from the weekend, like how they celebrated a family member’s birthday or what activities you’ve done as a family.

I love when a visitor shyly walks into our room and your child crowds around them, inviting them to sit with us and including them in our class.

I love watching them sit around me as I tell them Bible stories and laugh as they all shoot their hands in the air the second I’m finished to prove they were the “best listener” and answer questions about our story.

I love when we are discussing our Bible story and they point out where God showed mercy and grace or freely forgave or His plan of redemption. I love that they know no matter what, we can have hope in Jesus Christ and eternal life.

I love when we are giving prayer requests and their faces earnestly request prayer for a family in our church whose going through a difficult time or salvation for a loved one or for a parent’s physical ailment or even for their fish and snails to stop fighting.☺️

During those days when things aren’t going as well as you would like and you’re tired and frustrated, irritated and angry, just know that it’s not hopeless! Raising kids is exhausting and difficult but it’s so rewarding! You’re doing a fantastic job!

I think you’re an amazing parent (and grandparent!) and you are teaching your child about God’s love, instilling a desire to love Him because He first loved us, a desire to please Him and to love others before ourselves.

You’re an amazing parent because you’re teaching your child love and respect. I know this because I watch them in my class. I see them listen quietly and obey and respect authority.

You’re an amazing parent because I know your child asked Jesus to live in their hearts and you’re teaching them the fundamentals of the Gospel and why we believe what we believe.

You’re an amazing parent because you wake your family up early every Sunday morning to bring them to Sunday school, then church. I see how hard you are working to ground them in the truth. Keep up the good work!

I pray God blesses you and your family! Thank you for allowing me to be a special part of your child’s life every Sunday morning! I’m going to miss them after “Promotion Sunday” when they move up a grade.?

Train up a child in the way he should go: and when he is old, he will not depart from it. Proverbs 22:6

Thy word have I hid in mine heart, that I might not sin against thee. Psalm 119:11

And let us not be weary in well doing: for in due season, we shall reap if we faint not. Galatians 6:9

We love him because he first loved us.
