The GPS didn’t work without a signal. Frustration mounted and I could’ve kicked myself. The cars coasted by as I slowly drove down the interstate trying to get my bearings. Hours from my family and a day’s journey from home, I was lost in a strange area.
Nothing looked familiar and all I saw were mountains rising up on one side of me and farmland on the other side. The only sign of life were a few stray cows lazily munching on grass in a nearby pasture.
I drove pulled off at the next exit onto an old country road. More cows. Terrific. Reaching for my cell phone, I glanced at it, noticing a faint signal. There it was! I was only 25 miles away from where I needed to be but there was a slight problem. Every time I took the recommended route, my GPS recalculates. I made U-turn after U-turn trying to follow the faulty directions before I finally gave up, pulling off the side of the road under a shade tree.
Distraught thoughts occupied my mind with a bit of hysteria. I was so lost. I needed to find my way back, but how? Resting my head against the steering wheel, I’d all but given up. Hot tears slid down my face and I felt helpless. Five minutes passed, then ten. Finally, a police cruiser drove past. I flung open my door, waving frantically to get his attention, pleading for help. Despite my sobs and sniffling, he pointed me in the right direction.
The road home lay less than 200 yards from my parked car. Because the road I needed looked less than travel-worn and most of the drivers took another route, I thought it wasn’t the right way. And the broken GPS didn’t help matters.
If I would’ve paid more attention to my route and less attention to my fellow drivers and distracting music, I never would’ve lost my way.
Maybe you’ve been there too. Sometimes when we are caught up with following the frenzy, we forget who we are and where we are going. It’s more important in that moment to be the first one with the biggest house or most expensive car or best job. It’s more important in that moment to have the coolest friends or to be the best-dressed. Competing with our peers doesn’t disappear when we become adults but reappears with a vengeance and a bigger budget.
The Bible tells us narrow is the path that leads to Heaven (Matthew 7:13). Don’t let the distractions of the world keep you from hearing the voice of the Lord. When I couldn’t find my way, God was faithful to send help for me to return to the right road.
Are you lost today? Have you let the distractions of this world deviate you from the right path? Are you feeling so distant from the Lord you aren’t sure how to return?
God promises He is always with us and will never leave us or forsake us. If we aren’t feeling His presence anymore, it’s not because He isn’t there. It’s because we’ve been distracted by the wrong influences. It’s time to refocus, reassess our schedule or lifestyle, and make changes. The right road is just around the corner.
Follow the right road today and let’s fix our focus on the Lord.
Proverbs 4:25-27 —Let your eyes look forward; fix your gaze straight ahead. Carefully consider the path for your feet, and all your ways will be established. Don’t turn to the right or to the left; keep your feet away from evil.
Psalm 119:15 —I will meditate on your precepts and fix my eyes on your ways.
Hebrews 12:2–Looking unto Jesus, the author and finisher of our faith; who for the joy that was set before him endured the cross, despising the shame, and is set down at the right hand of the throne of God.
Psalm 119:105–Your Word is a lamp unto my feet and a light unto my path.
Amen!!! I am definitely struggling with spending time alone in the Word. I’m sure to do little devotions and Bible readings with the boys but I’m lacking…and I have all the excuses in the world! Thank you, for helping me to see that the enemy would love for me to continue to make excuses and just stay too busy to spend time with the Lord. But , greater is He that is in me than he who is in the world. <3
I love the First 5 app from Proverbs 31 and the built-in alarm wakes me up so my devotion is the first thing I do in the morning! It’s easy to slack on our time with the Lord, but when we make time for it, its the sweetest part of the day! Don’t give up, sister! 🙂
