Summertime Snacks

We finished lunch at the house today and trooped down the long driveway to my in-laws’ swimming pool. No sooner had the kids jumped in the pool before they climbed back out, clamoring around me wanting snacks.

Seriously? They just ate! Thankfully, I had brought a 5 lb bag of carrots with us so I whipped those out of my tote for them to snack on.

With school out and kids home for the whole summer (or kids home year round like my little homeschoolers!), a list of quick and simple snacks comes in handy!

I like to offer a snack filled with protein and fiber that will fill our kids up. Most of the time they aren’t truly hungry so I encourage them to drink a glass of water first. ☺️

Our kids have recently become “dippers”–they love to dip their snacks and here are a few quick and healthy snack ideas to last you all summer long!

1. Carrots and Greek Ranch

Just mix a packet of Hidden valley ranch dressing mix with 1-2 cups of Greek yogurt and dip away with your favorite veggies! It packs a nice punch of protein and carrots are great for growing kids.
2. Hummus and raw veggies

I don’t have a great recipe for this but the Sabra hummus from the store works well in a pinch!

3.  Guacamole and Tortilla Chips

My friend, Jenn, says guacamole is just mashed avocados mixed with whatever you find in your kitchen–tomatoes, garlic, onion, a little lime juice and whatever spices you’re in the mood for and voila! Guacamole! (She has converted me from a guacamole hater to a guacamole lover and I think I’ll go whip some up right now!)

4. Bean Salsa

This is a favorite snack of another friend of mine and she claims the same thing–bean dip is just beans with whatever other ingredients you have on hand tossed in with it! Rinse your favorite beans and dump them in a bowl. Mix in diced tomatoes, chopped onions (or just some onion powder if you’re like me and can’t stand crunchy onions!), a little garlic, chopped cilantro, and a glug or two of Balsamic dressing is amazing!
5. Fruit dip

I think most kids love fruit and what better way to eat it than dipping it? Around here, we make sure to pair fruit with a great source of protein so I like to mix cream cheese with Greek yogurt and a drizzle of local raw honey. Dairy aversion? No worries! Just dip it in Greek yogurt and honey and your kids will still enjoy it!

These dipping snacks aren’t just for kids! Moms, you can enjoy these too!

Make up some of the dips in the morning so your kids can easily access them throughout the day. Encourage them and build independence by giving them the tools the need to make their own snacks!?

What are your favorite snacks for the summer?

Until Next Time,

The Farm Wyfe
