❤️ I never liked Valentine’s Day. ❤️
It was always the day filled with couples boasting their love for one another, however short that lasted in middle school.
It was always the day my girlfriends received singing grams and candy grams and heart shaped balloons.
It was always the day I was jealous of the love going around and I couldn’t have loved it less.
But 13 years ago, I married the man of my dreams and I actually looked forward to this pink and red day, being showered with roses and chocolates.
But my husband isn’t romantic like that and he gave me a piglet instead. Another year was baby chicks. I realized a gift from a farmer would always be a gift that kept giving. Like an animal to produce meat or eggs for us or some sort of coop or fenced field to corral another herd of animals.
And I realized that’s ok.
Valentine’s Day might be Hallmark movies, chocolates, and roses for some. Or it might be an early bedtime, a book by lamplight, and a TV dinner. Or it might be another baby animal.
Whatever it looks like, don’t let someone else’s standards determine your expectations. If you’ve set high expectations for your spouse and you’re waiting for a surprise evening that isn’t going to come, you’ll go to bed this evening disenchanted and discouraged.
So don’t do that.
If your husband isn’t the outwardly romantic sort, maybe make a list of all the ways he is amazing. Make a list and leave it by his sink. Give him a shoulder rub or a forehead kiss and let him know you appreciate him just the way he is.
Because he is amazing and he’s perfect for you and together–you’re awesome.
My Valentine? He’s working late tonight as we enter a new planting season. It makes for long days and exhausting evenings but it’s only for a season.
Your Valentine? Whether you have one or not, I wish you an evening filled with gratitude toward the one Man who loved you more than anything that He gave his life for you. Not your husband. Jesus.
Looking for someone to adore tonight? Someone to shower your affection on?
I can’t think of anyone more deserving than the Lord. Lavish Him with praise tonight and every night, being filled with gratitude for the gifts He’s given you.
I hope you have a wonderful Valentine’s Day whether you’re single or married or celebrating or staying home. Love your people today. ♥️
