From Trash to Treasure: What One Man Found Value In When The World Said It Was Worthless

Don’t be afraid; you are worth more than many sparrows.” Luke 12:7

“What is this junk?” I nudged the pile of rusty scrap metal with my toe. My father in law laughed, “This old heap is gonna make a pretty gift for someone.”

“Really?” I asked, doubtfully. I didn’t want to hurt his feelings but I was pretty sure this heap of junk wasn’t good for anything. After all, it had been thrown in a pile of trash behind the barn, cast away because it was obviously worthless.

My father-in-law worked on that rusty metal for a few weeks, carefully sanding it to a smooth finish until the rust and bumps were gone and the original metal gleamed. He welded the pieces together, creating a frame in which he set over two axels. He bolted long wooden slats to the skeletal frame of the restored metal. I left the barn one
afternoon, shaking my head, hoping this gift would actually be useful to whoever he was building it for.

The next morning, the finished product shocked me. No longer was there a pile of old metal or wood. Instead, sat a beautiful red wagon.

“What do you think?” He asked me with a twinkle in his eyes.

“It’s beautiful!” I exclaimed, rubbing my hand along the smooth, shiny apple
colored rail. “It’s red!”

“It’s yours,” he smiled.

I felt stunned. Others failed to see the value in that rusty old metal, but he took what they had cast away and turned into a magnificent, beautiful gift. The scrap metal had lain in a heap, weatherworn, rusted from the elements, and not being used at all, but now it was restored and full of purpose.

You Are Valuable

Are you like that old pile of metal, rusted from your past and wondering if anyone notices the world has cast you aside? Sadness, pain, and tragic circumstances have left their mark on you, and you’ve been branded as worthless. You’ve listened to the lies that you’re not good enough and no one cares about you. You’re left in a pile, letting the wind and rain leave a little more rust on you every day.

But you aren’t worthless; you are valuable.

Stop allowing the past to predict your present because your value is real and you are worth something beautiful.

“Are not five sparrows sold for two pennies? Yet not one of them is forgotten by God. Indeed the very hairs of your head are all numbered. Don’t be afraid; you are worth more than many sparrows.” Luke 12:6-7

God sees past what others don’t value and He loves you, cherishes you, and is putting you back together to do a great work for Him. He is in the process of restoring you to something beautiful and He has a purpose for you. God has already defined your worth and He sees you as an amazing creation of His so rest in this promise that He loves you so much, He knows the very number of hairs on your head.

Let God define your worth instead of the world. You are a treasure.
