Easy Cinnamon Sticks

When I was a child, we used to visit this sweet little bakery downtown called Peterson’s Bakery where my mom would usher us kids in and wait patiently at the counter to take home a box of mouth watering cinnamon sticks. It was a special treat and we always looked forward to it until one day that sweet little bakery wasn’t there anymore.

My mom created this easy copy-cat recipe our family has used for the past 20 years. It’s so simple a child could do it and they take less than 10 minutes to bake!

My son asks for them most often and because he lost his first tooth this week, I thought we should celebrate with his favorite breakfast. (I should note–these are such a rare treat in my own home, we eat them only 2-3x a year.)

I woke up early to beat my little early-risers awake and managed to pop these cinnamon sticks in the oven before my son ran into the kitchen, clutching a tooth pillow, shouting, “She came! She came! She left me $1, flosser thingies and a note, Mama!”

We read the note together, his snaggle-toothed grin growing wider, and then he darted off to brush his teeth and use his new flosser-thingies.

The cinnamon sticks weren’t nearly done, so I whipped up some scrambled eggs and the icing while we waited. Sausage is great with these too but we were all out so eggs it was.

  Easy Cinnamon Sticks

Ingredients:

2 cans refrigerated crescent rolls

2 tbsp butter

2 tsp cinnamon

2 tsp sugar

Icing:

2 tsp melted butter

3/4 c powdered sugar

2 tsp milk

Splash of vanilla extract

Directions:

Preheat oven to 375 degrees. Unroll crescents and lay rectangles on a greased cookie sheet. Pinch together the perforated dough. Spread softened butter across each rectangle. Dust them in the cinnamon and sugar. Using a pizza cutter, slice them into thin, long strips. Bake for 8-10 minutes until golden. Let cool for 2 minutes and then carefully re-slice with your pizza cutter. Using a fork, drizzle icing across the top. Pair with bacon or sausage and eggs. Enjoy!

I hope you enjoy this family recipe as much as we do!

Until next time,
