DIY Crayon Box

Try as I may, I cannot keep things from being broken and torn up around here with FOUR boys! They are high energy and destructive, but I love them nonetheless, so rather than spending Hubs’ hard earned cash on organizing bins, I try to repurpose any old containers I can.

Our coloring box was looking a a bit rough after much “man”-handling by our little men. I’m telling you, the most collectively accurate descriptive word for them is “destructive”. Thankfully, this time it was just a crayon box and nothing else!

Last month at Costco, I picked up a box of Magic Erasers for the kids to easily clean their bathroom with, and I thought it would make the perfect repurposed crayon box!

It is sturdy and the lid snaps on tightly and if the boys manage to tear it up (which I hope they don’t!), I didn’t spend a dime on it!?

First, the label needed to be removed. Let me warn you: I tried many different Pinterest worthy ways of label removing and only one worked well.

Vinegar doesn’t work well, nor does it smell pleasant. It was the first item I reached for and it did manage to get most of the top layer of label off. Cherry pit based kitchen scrub didn’t work either but it did smell nice!

The miracle label remover that involved ZERO elbow grease was two simple ingredients found right in your kitchen: any kind of oil (I used olive) and baking soda. Mix equal parts of the oil and baking soda and apply over the top of the label surface. Let it sit while you prepare dinner or switch over a load of laundry.

After a minimum of 10 minutes, rinse container under warm running water to completely remove the label residue. If the surface is still sticky, apply another coating of oil and baking soda. Let sit another 5-10 minutes before rinsing again. Continue until all the sticky residue has been removed.

Watch and be amazed as you effortlessly wipe off the label!

Then, when your label is gone and your box is shiny and clean, fill with anything your heart desires! We chose crayons and glue sticks but anything small would work well–ponytails and hair ties, match box cars or Legos, beads, and so much more!

Don’t they look so much better in this clear container than that old ratty crayon box? My favorite part??? It was FREE!☺️

What are your favorite money saving tips for organization?
