A Time to Play and A Time to Rest

I’ve come to love our Saturday mornings since I became a working, homeschooling mom. The weeks are full of rushing–rush to wake up and get dressed, rushed to eat, rushed through schoolwork at the office, rush, rush, rush.

And now that we are taking a break from sports and other activities, our Saturday mornings are free and full of fun. We don’t set alarms to wake up and the kids are thrilled for a hot meal (besides oatmeal) whenever we do get up (before 7 which is “sleeping in”).  We play and rest on the weekends!

Honestly, it doesn’t matter what time I set my alarm for because the twins have an internal alarm set to wake up 15 minutes before my own alarm goes off. And that means trouble. Last week they woke up and snuck into the freezer full of cookie dough that was supposed to be for the Tour de Farm. The week before that they dumped oats all over the floor and drove monster trucks through it. And this morning, well this morning was much more of a mess.

I accept complete responsibility for it. Before I went to bed, I saw the 25 lb bag of flour on the counter and I thought to myself, I should put that away before someone gets into it. But no, I was way too tired to spend 5.8762 seconds putting the bag away and we paid dearly for it this morning.

Before the rooster crowed, the twins awoke and couldn’t resist the temptation of a huge bag of white powder. That’s right. They managed to pull the stool off the counter where we keep it each evening to prevent them from climbing, but apparently they’ve figured a way to outsmart me. One of them climbed up the counter and threw handfuls of flour onto the floor. A simple mess turned into an all out war as the two, cackling with glee, threw fistfuls of flour at each other.

I knew I should roll out of bed and check on them the minute I heard feet pitter patter across the wood floor, but the luxury of lying in our bed for an extra minute or two before the rest of the kids woke up was too tempting.

Next time, I’ll ignore the soft downy pillow under my head and the heavy handmade quilt tucked around me and get up to stop the unstoppable duo.

Breakfast was put on hold as we swept up the mess, vacuumed between the boards, sweep again, vacuumed again and finally mopped just so we could get in the kitchen.

Seriously, it wasn’t that bad but flour does seem to spread the more you try to clean it up. These boys. Phew. They both needed baths to wash the flour out of their hair, ears and nose. Did you know flour plus water makes a paste?

Yeah, well I forgot that early in the morning. I just gave up and sent them outdoors to play while they waited for their pumpkin muffins to bake.

We will take good baths tonight and rest well before church in the morning. ?

I hope you have a wonderful weekend and enjoy every minute with your family. Thanks for following The Farm Wyfe blog. Happy Saturday!
