5 Books Every Family Should Read Together

“Grab our books and meet me in the boys room,” I called out to the children. There was a mad scramble as they raced to find a place on the bunkbed for our much anticipated nightly routine.

“I have my Bible,” one of them answered.

Another responded, “I have our missionary book!”

I smiled as I stepped into the boys room. The slight stench of dirty work boots didn’t register as I looked at my sweet babies crammed together on the bed.

“Sit by me, Mama,” they said simultaneously.

I urged them to squeeze together and make room for me. Sitting criss-cross applesauce between them, I reached for the missionary book. One of the toddlers slipped into my lap and I breathed in his sweet smelling scent. I began reading with all six kids hanging on to every word.

Reading together in the evenings is one of our favorite family activities. Whether we have had a great day or a stress-filled day, this is the perfect time to wind down and talk with one another. We grow closer as a family and closer to the Lord as we dig deep into His Word together.

Lately we have been reading stories about missionaries and we all LOVE it! Someone always drags the globe out so we can see where these missionaries lived and imagine what their lives were like. It’s great for the kids to know life exists beyond their little bubbles. Hardships, struggles, and persecution is very real in this world and its amazing to watch them realize that.

Here are a few of our favorite stories of missionaries. I hope you read them with your family and enjoy them as much as we do!

1. I Heard Good News Today

This is a collection of short stories about missionaries from all over the world. Families of all ages would enjoy reading this book.

2. George Müller

Another book your entire family will enjoy! Our kids didn’t want to put this book down at the end of a chapter! I’m warning you, reading this book will make you realize how fortunate we are to live in America and also challenge you to live a life more eternally-focused.

3. Gladys Aylward

I would recommend this book for older children. We read it with all of our kids (ranging from one year olds to an eight year old) and they enjoyed it but some of it is very graphic so you may want to censor it as you’re reading aloud.

4. Catching Their Talk in a Box

This is a sweet, inspirational story of the spirit and dedication of Joy Ridderhof, who fully trusted God during her journey to turn unwritten languages into audio recordings of the Gospel.

5. And The Word Came With Power

This is a powerful story of a woman who became a missionary to a people group in the Phillipines who strongly believed in spirits and how God proved himself more powerful to them than the spirits.
Remember to pray daily for missionaries across the world who are sharing the Gospel every day through their actions, sacrifices and love for others. Take this little book recommendation as a personal challenge to live our lives with an eternal perspective.

What things can your family do to impact God’s Kingdom?
Until next time,
